Kollmorgen is Runnerup for Rice Award

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – Redshirt freshman quarterback Sawyer Kollmorgen finished second in the voting for the 2012 Jerry Rice Award. Kollmorgen finished second to John Robertson of Villanova.

Kollmorgen finished the voting process with 25 first place votes and 34 second place votes. He became the fifth freshman to start at quarterback in UNI history. He finished the season 185 for 313 passing with 21 touchdowns and 2,460 yards.

The Jenks, Okla. Native finished second in the conference in total offense averaging 228.4 yards per game and in passing average per game with 222.7. Kollmorgen passed for over 200 yards in nine games this season including a season high 333 yards against Youngstown State.   Kollmorgen led the MVFC in touchdown passes with 21 and passing efficiency with a 141.88 rating. Kollmorgen tallied four games with three touchdown passes, including his collegiate debut at Wisconsin where he threw for 265 yards against the Big Ten's Badgers.

Throughout the season, Kollmorgen was a two-time MVFC Newcomer of the week honoree and was named the MVFC Freshman and Newcomer of the year.

Fellow MVFC freshman T.J. Lally of South Dakota State and J.J. Raffelson of Western Illinois finished 7th and 15th, respectively, in the balloting.

The Jerry Rice Award is given to the FCS's top freshman in the nation. The Rice Award, in its second year, is named for legendary wide receiver Jerry Rice, who was a two-time first-team All-American in the FCS (then Division I-AA) at Mississippi Valley State. The award will be voted on by a national panel of sports information and media relations directors, broadcasters, writers and other dignitaries this week, and presented at the FCS Awards Banquet and Presentation on Dec. 17 in Philadelphia.
