College Sporting News has named University of Northern Iowa senior linebacker L.J. Fort its FCS National Defensive Player of the Year and North Dakota State offensive lineman Paul Cornick it's Offensive Lineman of the Year. Those two highlight a list of seven MVFC players on the Fabulous Fifty FCS All-America Team, announced Tuesday.
Other MVFC players honored include C Bryan Boemer of Southern Illinois, RB Shakir Bell of Indiana State; DL Ben Obaseki of Indiana State; DB Marcus Williams of North Dakota State; and DL Ben Boothby of UNI. Notably, the Bison defense was named the 2011 FCS Playoff "MVP."
CSN is the second media outlet to honor Fort as its FCS National Defensive Player of the Year, as College Sports Madness had previously presented him with the same award. Fort finished second in the voting for the Buck Buchanan Award presented annually by The Sports Network to the top defensive player in the country. Fort was named the Missouri Valley Football Conference Defensive Player of the Year and an All-American by six different organizations following a 2011 season in which he led the nation with 184 total tackles and 14.15 tackles per game. His 184 stops set a new UNI single-season record.
