YSU Wins "Best in Nation" Honor
San Antonio, Texas -- The 2008 edition of the Youngstown State Football Game Program, "Penguin Power" was named the Best In the Nation by College Sports Information Directors of America. The annual awards were presented on Wednesday at the CoSIDA workshop which is being held in San Antonio.

Missouri Valley Football Conference Announces Academic Awards
ST. LOUIS -- Thirteen student-athletes highlight nearly 400 who earned selection to the 2008 Missouri Valley Football Conference Honor Roll, as announced by the league office. Those 13 earned the league's highest academic achievement by capturing the Missouri Valley Football Conference President's Council Academic Excellence Award.

Two Valley Football Players Taken In NFL Draft
Two Missouri Valley Football players were taken in the 2009 NFL draft over the weekend. LB Jason Williams of Western Illinois was the top pick of the Cowboys and first FCS player taken, while FS Nick Schommer was taken in the seventh round by Tennessee.

Missouri Valley Football Announces Eco-Friendly Practices
The Missouri Valley Football Conference is committing to adopt environmentally friendly practices, Commissioner Patty Viverito announced today. As part of the eco-initiative the conference will discontinue the printing of media guides and league directories. Going forward, these publications will be accessible through other "greener" mediums.

Hellickson Named Acting Director of Athletics at SDSU
Professor Mylo Hellickson, longtime faculty athletics representative at South Dakota State University, has been appointed its acting director of athletics. President David L. Chicoine made the announcement Friday morning to the athletic staff. The appointment, which takes effect immediately, follows the planned retirement of Athletic Director Fred Oien announced last month.

SDSU Athletic Director Announces Retirement
Fred Oien, who has held several positions in South Dakota State University athletics since 1979, has informed university officials of his intentions to retire, the university announced today. Oien has served as athletic director and also as head of the Department of Health, Physical Education and Recreation for the past 18 years. Oien plans to retire effective April 8, 2009.

Valley Football Final Regular-Season Notes
For the sixth time in the league's 24-year history, the conference has co-champions as Southern Illinois and Northern Iowa both ended the season with identical 7-1 conference records. Southern Illinois, by virtue of its win against UNI, earned the league's automatic bid into the NCAA FCS 16-team playoffs. UNI earned an at-large bid. For the 14th-straight year, the league earned two or more spots in the 16-team field.

Valley Football Recaps (Oct. 11)
In a battle between two ranked Valley Football schools, No. 17 Western Illinois got the better of No. 6 North Dakota State, 27-22, ending the Bison's 15-game home win streak. Elsewhere, though, the home teams held serve as Missouri State beat Youngstown State; UNI topped Illinois State, and Southern Illinois handled Indiana State.

Valley Football Weekly Notebook (Oct. 6)
After games of Oct. 4, every Valley team has played at least one conference game, and eight of the league's nine teams have at least one conference loss. Illinois State (2-2, 1-0) is the only Valley team with an unblemished Valley record thus far. ISU has not had sole possession of first place since Oct. 30, 1999. The Redbirds are at No. 8 UNI on Saturday.

Saturday (Oct. 4) Valley Football Recaps
On Saturday, #6 North Dakota State rallied from a 20-0 deficit to beat #11 Southern Illinois and extend its homefield winning streak to 15 games with a 35-27 win. RB Herb Donaldson had four TDs and 273 yards in the #21 Leathernecks' 33-21 win at Missouri State; and Illinois State combined for 410 rush yards in its 57-6 victory at Indiana State. Elsewhere, #4 McNeese State edged #18 South Dakota State in 3OT, 46-44, while Youngstown State fell at Southern Utah, 14-7.

No. 10 UNI Topples Visiting Nicholls State, 34-14
CEDAR FALLS, Iowa - The University of Northern Iowa football team kept its perfect home record intact after a 34-14 victory over Nicholls State on Thursday night in the UNI-Dome. The Panthers improve to 3-2 overall and remain 1-1 in Missouri Valley Conference play. Nicholls State playing just its second game of the 2008 season drops to 0-2 overall.

NFF Announces 2008 Draddy Trophy Semifinalists
DALLAS, October 1, 2008 - Selected as the best and brightest from the college gridiron, The National Football Foundation & College Hall of Fame (NFF) announced today the 164 semifinalists for the 2008 Draddy Trophy, presented by HealthSouth, and the candidates for the 2008 NFF National Scholar- Athlete Awards. Four Missouri Valley Football players are among the finalists.

Weekly Football Notebook (Sept. 29)
Beginning this week (with a Thursday game on ESPNU), a Missouri Valley Football Conference team will be featured on national television on four-straight weeks. Thursday's game at the UNI-Dome between Northern Iowa and Nicholls State will be seen on ESPNU at 6:30 pm CT. Following the UNI-Nicholls State game, the next three weekends (Oct. 11-18-25) will all involve league games aired on Fox College Sports.

This week's Missouri Valley Football Conference players of the week are RB Kyle Minett of South Dakota State; ILB Brandin Jordan of Southern Illinois; OL Aaron Lockwood of Southern Illinois, and PK Kyle Dougherty of Southern Illinois. Minett and Dougherty had the game-winning score on the final play in their team's wins, while Jordan grabbed three key turnovers in the fourth quarter in SIU's win against No. 5 UNI.

Valley Football Has NCAA Record-Setting Day
For the first time in FCS history (since it began as I-AA in 1978), three FCS games were decided in regulation on a game's final play on the same date. And all three games Saturday involved teams from the Missouri Valley Football Conference. South Dakota State (at Stephen F. Austin), Southern Illinois (vs. UNI) and Liberty (over Youngstown State) all won as time expired.

Southern Illinois (1-1, 0-0) opens its league slate against visiting Northern Iowa (2-1, 1-0) on Saturday, Sept. 27, in Carbondale. The winner of the SIU-UNI game has won the league in five of the past seven years. Since 2001, the two teams have combined for nine playoff bids, three semifinal berths and one trip to the national championship game (UNI-2005).

The Jackrabbits (1-1, 1-0) are coming off an impressive victory against Youngstown State in the conference opener for both schools on Sept. 6. North Dakota State retained its No. 1 spot in the FCS Coaches Poll after defeating Central Connecticut State, 50-14, Saturday. The Bison received 20 out of a possible 27 first-place votes and 668 total points to stay at No. 1. The Bison remained No. 2 in the Sports Network poll, behind Appalachian State. Meanwhile, Northern Iowa, Southern Illinois, Western Illinois, South Dakota State and Youngstown State represent Valley Football in the top-25 this week.

This week's Missouri Valley Football Conference players of the week are RB Larry Warner of Southern Illinois, S Mike McElroy of Southern Illinois, PK Taylor Rowan of Western Illinois, and OT Kevaughn Brown of Missouri State. Warner had one of the best all-purpose nights in league history, McElroy had two interceptions and a fumble recovery, and Rowan set an all-time NCAA record for consecutive PATs made.

South Dakota State Wins First-Ever Valley Football Game in Convincing Fashion; League Goes Perfect 4-0 in Non-League Play
In what was one of the earliest dates for a conference football game, South Dakota State handled visiting Youngstown State, 40-7, in its first-ever Valley Football contest. Meanwhile, the league went a perfect 4-0 in non-conference games on Saturday. Taylor Rowan (pictured) set an NCAA record with his 129th consecutive PAT in Western Illinois' victory.

Bears drop opener to Washburn, 35-27
Missouri State fell behind 14-0 in its season opener Thursday night, but took the lead midway through the third quarter, only to fall inches short in the final seconds in a 35-27 loss to visiting Washburn. The Bears' final offensive play ended just short of the Washburn goal line.
