Former Panther Brad Meester, Jacksonville Jaguars Raise $90,000 For Tornado Relief in Iowa
The Jacksonville Jaguars raised $90,000 for tornado relief in Parkersburg, Iowa through donations from partners, coaches, players and staff and the sale of AP Falcons Tornado Relief Hats. A check for $24,000 will be distributed to the Aplington-Parkersburg High School Football Program while $66,000 will go to the Parkersburg Relief Fund.

Western Illinois Aids in Sandbagging Effort
NIOTA, Ill. - Several members of the Western Illinois University football team took part in emergency sandbagging efforts Monday in nearby Niota, Ill., a town of 650 approximately 40 miles northwest of Macomb, threatened by the rising Mississippi River.

North Dakota State's Gene Taylor Honored at NACDA
DALLAS--North Dakota State University Director of Athletics Gene Taylor was one of 29 winners of the AstroTurf AD of the Year Award (ADOY) announced today by The National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics. Taylor, who has been at NDSU since July 2001, was recognized as the Football Championship Subdivision Central Region winner.

Gateway Football Conference Changes Its Name
ST. LOUIS ? Presidents of the nine-member Gateway Football Conference and the 10-member Missouri Valley Conference have approved a rebranding initiative that changes the football conference name from the Gateway Football Conference to the Missouri Valley Football Conference. The change is effective immediately.

Gateway Announces 2007 Academic Honor Roll
Nine student-athletes highlight more than 200 who earned selection to the 2007 Gateway Football Conference Honor Roll, as announced by the league office. Those nine earned the league's highest academic achievement by capturing the Gateway Football Conference President's Council Academic Excellence Award.

Two From Gateway Drafted in 2008
For the first time since 1976, two Northern Iowa football players were selected in the same National Football League draft. Offensive linemen Chad Rinehart (Boone, Iowa) and Brandon Keith (McAlester, Okla.) saw their names come across as draft picks on the second day of the two-day draft. They were the only two Gateway players drafted this past weekend.

Farley Named UNI Interim Director of Athletics
CEDAR FALLS, Iowa -- University of Northern Iowa head football coach Mark Farley has been named UNI interim director of athletics. The appointment is effective Friday, Feb. 1. Farley replaces Rick Hartzell who recently resigned.

Three Gateway Football Conference teams are among the Top 25 in the final Sports Network and FCS Coaches polls, announced Tuesday, Dec. 18. Southern Illinois is the highest-ranked Gateway team, clocking in at No. 3, behind national champion Appalachian State and national runnerup Delaware.

The 51 winners of the 10th annual Football Championship Subdivision Athletics Directors Association Academic All-Star Team has been announced by the FCS Athletics Directors Association (FCS ADA). Three Gateway student-athletes, Western Illinois' Travis Cherry, and Youngstown State's Bob Perez and Tom Zetts, are on the list.

Two Gateway Players Among Top-4 for National Awards
QB Eric Sanders of UNI was the runnerup for the 2007 Walter Payton Award, announced Thursday, Dec. 13, at the Sports Network FCS Awards Dinner. QB Jayson Foster of Georgia Southern won the award. And LB Kye Stewart of Illinois State was fourth in the Buchanan balloting -- that award was won by Kroy Biermann of Montana.

Mark Farley Honored With 2007 Eddie Robinson Award
Chattanooga, TN (Sports Network) - UNI head coach Mark Farley was named the 21st winner of the Eddie Robinson Award tonight at the Sports Network FCS Awards Dinner, held on the eve of the NCAA Division I Football Championship. The Robinson Award, named for the legendary Grambling head coach, is presented annually to the top head coach in FCS.

Jerry Kill Takes Over at Northern Illinois as Head Coach
Jerry Kill's dream to take over the helm of a Football Bowl Subdivison (formerly I-A) program became a reality today when he was introduced as the head coach at Northern Illinois University. Kill succeeds Joe Novak (63-75), who retired after 12 seasons, at the Mid-American Conference school.

Delaware Beats Salukis, 20-17, Ends SIU's Season at 12-2
(AP) Joe Flacco threw for 243 yards and two touchdowns, helping No. 13 Delaware edge fourth-ranked Southern Illinois 20-17 on Saturday to advance to the Football Championship Subdivision title game. The Salukis' six-game winning streak ended one game shy of the national championship. SIU finished the year 12-2.

Trent Miles to Take Over Sycamore Football Program
Indiana State University Director of Athletics Ron Prettyman announced today (Dec. 4) the hiring of Trent Miles as head football coach. Miles is a native of Terre Haute, Ind., and is a 1987 graduate of Indiana State. Miles was a wide receiver at Indiana State from 1982-86, where his 1983 and 1984 squads each won nine games and advanced to the NCAA FCS playoffs. The 1984 Sycamores were ranked No. 1 in the nation for most of the season. That team was inducted into the Indiana State University Hall of Fame on Sept. 7, 2002.

Southern Illinois Beats UMass, UNI Falls to Delaware
Southern Illinois got an early big lead and held on for a 34-27 victory against visiting Massachusetts and Northern Iowa's perfect season ended after a loss to visiting Delaware, 39-27. The Salukis will host Delaware in the NCAA FCS semifinals on Friday, Dec. 7, in a game scheduled for 7 p.m. CT on ESPN2.

For the second time in three years, the Gateway's Newcomer of the Year is from Youngstown State, while a Missouri State player has claimed the league's freshman honor for the first time. Panthers Stay Unbeaten, Earn League's AQ
Top-ranked UNI clinched at least a share of its 13th Gateway title with a 38-17 win over Missouri State. The win also guarantees the Panthers a spot in the 2007 FCS playoffs with the league's automatic bid. Southern Illinois stayed one game back in the standings with a 10-9 win at Western Illinois; Youngstown State beat Indiana State, 40-7, and Illinois State lost at North Dakota State, 54-28.

ISU's Geno Blow Lost for Rest of Season
As if the 27-14 Family Day loss to No. 24 Western Illinois did not sting enough for the Illinois State football team, X-rays revealed a second metacarpal fracture in Geno Blow's left hand, prematurely ending the 2007 season for the sophomore running back. He will undergo surgery later this week.

No. 1-ranked and unbeaten UNI rallied from 13 points down in the fourth quarter to beat visiting No. 20 Youngstown State, 14-13, in front of a sold-out crowd. Western Illinois kept its Gateway title and playoff hopes afloat with a 27-14 win at Illinois State, and Missouri State pushed its record to 5-4 with a 63-7 win past Indiana State.

YSU Holds Passionately Pink For The Cure Weekend
Youngstown -- The Youngstown State Athletic Department, along with the Horizon League and the Gateway Football Conference, will work together during five YSU athletic events this weekend to raise funds to fight Breast Cancer as part of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Four Gateway Teams Ranked This Week - Panthers No. 2
Northern Iowa remains at No. 2 in this week's Sports Network poll, heading a list of four Gateway teams in the Top 25 this week. The Panthers are No. 3 in the coaches poll. Southern Illinois (7/6), Youngstown State (12/13) and Western Illinois (19/19) are also ranked.

Weekly Gateway Notebook - Oct. 7
Southern Illinois (6-0) travels to Northern Iowa (5-0) in a battle of Gateway unbeatens. It marks the first time in league history that two perfect Gateway teams have faced each other this late in a season, and it is the first time that SIU and UNI have met when both have been ranked in the Top 10.

Salukis Rally To Stay Perfect -- Gateway Recaps from Oct. 6
In Gateway action Oct. 6, Southern became the sixth team in Gateway history to start a season at 6-0 as it edged No. 10 Youngstown State, 24-17. SIU heads to UNI (5-0) for a huge Gateway matchup on Oct. 13. Elsewhere Saturday, Missouri State upended Illinois State, 58-41, and Western Illinois beat Indiana State, 19-7.

BMS To Produce National Broadcast of Select Division I FCS Games
Birmingham, AL -- The Gateway Football Conference will have three broadcasts on a seven-game Game of the Week package, with each game slated to be heard on 50,000-watt Clear Channel Communications affiliate WCKY, AM 1530 (Cincinnati). The first game is Saturday's Youngstown State-Southern Illinois contest.

According to the latest installment of the Gridiron Power Index (GPI), Northern Iowa is the nation's No. 1 team, while the Gateway (with five teams in the top 25) is rated as the second-best conference, behind only the Colonial Athletic Association.

Five Gateway Teams Ranked in Top 25
For an unprecedented fifth-straight week, five Gateway teams are ranked in the top-25 poll. In the Sports Network poll, UNI is ranked No. 2, trailing top-ranked Montana by only nine points (2,573 to 2,564). The Panthers are joined in the top 10 in that poll by Southern Illinois (7) and Youngstown State (10).

Gateway Football Notebook - Sept. 30
 This Saturday's contest between Southern Illinois and Youngstown State will be seen on CSTV. Kickoff from Carbondale, Ill., is 2:30 p.m. CT. Carter Blackburn and Brian Jones will call the game from McAndrew Stadium. It marks the third time that CSTV has televised a game from SIU, with the Salukis winning games against UNI in both 2004 and in 2006.

Gateway Football Recaps (Sept. 29)
Southern Illinois had a record-setting day in its 72-10 win at Indiana State on Saturday, while UNI also won on the road, edging Illinois State, 23-13, and Youngstown State's offense exploded for a 49-21 win against Missouri State. In non-conference play, No. 3 North Dakota State won at Western Illinois, 41-28.

Indiana State's Lou West Relieved of Coaching Duties
Indiana State University Director of Athletics Ron Prettyman this afternoon (September 24) announced that head football coach Lou West has been relieved of his duties effective immediately. He will be reassigned within the University. Former head coach Dennis Raetz will take over on an interim basis.

Gateway Football Recaps - Sept. 22
Gateway teams combined for a 5-2 record in non-conference play on Saturday. Missouri State won a shootout at Central Arkansas, 42-38, while league teams (UNI, SIU, WIU and YSU) outscored opponents, 172-26, in the four other Gateway wins. Illinois State (at No. 25 Missouri) and Indiana State (vs. No. 22 Eastern Illinois) fell to nationally ranked foes.

Weekly Notebook
UNI and Southern Illinois both won last weekend to improve to 3-0 on the season. The last time the Gateway had two teams perfect after three games was in 2003 (Southern Illinois and Western Kentucky). That year, SIU was 10-0 before losing the season finale at UNI. Western Kentucky lost its fourth game (at Auburn).

Illinois State's Jarek Thomas Out for the Season
Senior defensive lineman Jarek Thomas had his final season in a Illinois State uniform come to an end Saturday, as x-rays revealed a spiral fracture of his fibula as well as a syndesmotic (high ankle) sprain in his right ankle which he suffered during the second quarter of Illinois State's 24-21 victory over in-state rival and No. 14-ranked Eastern Illinois.

Gateway Saturday Game Recaps - Sept. 15
The league went 5-2 this past Saturday as all five of the Gateway's ranked teams won Saturday, which included No. 15 Illinois State's road win over No. 14 Eastern Illinois. Both UNI and Southern Illinois remained perfect (3-0) on the season, while Missouri State suffered its first defeat (at K-State).

Bears Win at Tennessee-Martin, 51-44, on Thursday
Missouri State jumped on top by 14 points in the first three minutes of the game and stayed in front the rest of the night to record a stunning 51-44 upset of 20th-ranked Tennessee-Martin on Thursday night. It was the Bears' first road win since Oct. 16, 2004, and ended a string of 11 straight Missouri State losses away from Springfield.

League Falls Short in Battles Against In-State FBS Rivals
Youngstown State and Indiana State opened up their seasons Saturday with losses against in-state rivals Ohio State and Indiana, respectively. Saturday's action capped a 4-3 non-conference week for the Gateway Conference, which included a 4OT win by Western Illinois against No. 19 South Dakota State.

League Opens Season Thursday Night With 4-1 Mark
The Gateway opened up the non-conference season with a 4-1 Thursday, featured by the longest game in league history as Western Illinois outlasted No. 19 South Dakota State, 29-26, in four overtimes. Drake stunned No. 7 Illinois State, 27-24, for the league's only loss, while Southern Illinois, Missouri State, and UNI had lopsided wins on opening night.

Two-time defending national champion Appalachian State received 27 of a possible 28 first-place votes. Youngstown State is the top Gateway school, ranked No. 6.

Indiana State Earns Gateway Conference All-Academic Award
ST. LOUIS, MO. -- Indiana State has captured the Gateway Football Conference All-Academic Award, as announced by the league office at Media Day on Tuesday, July 24. The All-Academic Award was established in 2004 to help bring attention to institutional academic excellence. It is based on the average student-athlete grade-point average for the academic year.

In the closest pre-season vote in Gateway history, the Panthers (with 166 total points) edged Illinois State and Youngstown State in the voting, as seven points separated the league's top three vote-getting teams.

Former Saluki Lifts USA To World Football Championship
Nebraska-Omaha's Kyle Kasperbauer rushed for two touchdowns and Southern Illinois' Craig Coffin kicked three field goals, including a game-winning 23-yarder in overtime as the United States rallied to defeat Japan, 23-20 in the title game of the 2007 World Championship of American Football at Todoroki Stadium on rainy, windswept Sunday afternoon.
