Four Gateway QBs Ranked in Top 20 by The Sports Network
Four Gateway quarterbacks have been rated among the nation's top quarterbacks, according to The Sports Network. QB Eric Sanders of UNI is the highest-rated returning QB of any in the Gateway as he is ranked No. 4 in the TSN rankings.

Ryan Jewell Named to Charter NFF National Honor Society Class
Irving, Texas -- Former Youngstown State All-America center Ryan Jewell (Warren, Ohio) was named a charter member of the National Football Foundation's National Honor Society, the organization announced recently. The NFF's National Honor Society represents individuals who had outstanding accomplishments in the classroom and on the playing field.

ISU's Robinson Drafted by Atlanta Falcons
NEW YORK ? When Laurent Robinson was selected by the Atlanta Falcons in the third round of the 2007 NFL Draft, he equaled another precedent in Illinois State football history. With a member of the Redbird football team selected in each of the last three NFL Drafts, Robinson joined Brent Hawkins and Boomer Grigsby to become the first back-to-back-back draftees for ISU in over 20 years.

Gateway and America Channel Ink Deal for TV Coverage
The Gateway Football Conference and the America Channel announced today that they have entered into a comprehensive video sports broadcast and content cooperation agreement. The new partnership includes extensive television coverage of Gateway football games.

Gateway Football Conference Expands To Nine as North Dakota State and South Dakota State to Join in 2008

Gateway Conference Holds Annual Meeting Feb. 19
On Monday (Feb. 19), the Gateway Football Conference conducted its annual meetings. At the meetings, representatives of North Dakota State and South Dakota State met with league representatives to explore membership possibilities . No decisions were made, however, additional information is being sought and further discussions are anticipated in early March.

Siskowic Earns Defensive MVP Honors
Former Illinois State linebacker Cameron Siskowic collected 13 tackles to lead The Nation to a 24-20 win over Texas in the first annual Texas vs. The Nation Collegiate All-Star Bowl at Sun Bowl Stadium on Friday night.

College Sporting News Announces Fabulous 50 FCS All-Star Team
CHICAGO -- Two-time national champion Appalachian State dominated the selection of the College Sporting News Fabulous FCS Fifty All-American All-Star team released Friday with three major award winners and seven selections altogether. Arkee Whitlock of SIU was named National Offensive Player of the Year.

UNI's Lindgren Among Eight Post-Graduate Scholarship Finalists
Cleveland, Ohio -- The Football Championship Subdivision (formerly Division I-AA) Athletics Directors Association (FCS ADA) announced the eight postgraduate scholarship finalists from the 54 members of the Academic All-Star Team, today. University of Northern Iowa senior wide receiver James Lindgren is among the eight finalists.

Eleven Gateway Players Honored on Sports Network All-America Team
The Gateway Conference had 11 players named to The Sports Network FCS All-America team, as announced by the organization Monday. Six players from the league earned first-team honors. In all, 78 players from 15 different conferences were selected to either the first-, second-, or third-team.

Four Gateway Conference teams are ranked in the season-ending top-25 polls. Youngstown State is the league's highest-ranked team (No. 4), while this marks the second-straight year and third in the last four that the league has ended the season with four ranked teams.

Three Gateway Players Finish In Top 5 For National Awards
The Walter Payton and Buck Buchanan Awards were announced Thursday, Dec. 14, and the Gateway Conference was well represented in the voting. RB Arkee Whitlock finished third in the Payton balloting, narrowly edging Youngstown State's Marcus Mason, who was fourth. And LB Cameron Siskowic was fifth in the Buchanan voting.

Youngstown State Featured on ESPN on Saturday
Youngstown State reached the semifinals of the FCS playoffs after beating league-member Illinois State, 28-21, on Dec. 2. It marks YSU's third semifinal appearance as a Gateway member (since 1997). Eight league teams have reached the semifinals in the past 10 years. And the league is 4-3 in those previous seven semifinal contests.

The top four FCS seeds advanced in the quarterfinals of the Division I Football Championship, as Youngstown State will represent the Gateway Conference in the semifinals after eliminating Illinois State, 28-21. Southern Illinois also saw its season come to a close, at Montana 20-3.

He's the lone Gateway representative on the First Team.

2006 Gateway All-Newcomer Team
For the fifth-straight year, the Gateway's Newcomer of the Year is a running back, while a Southern Illinois player has claimed the league's freshman honor for the second time since 1999. RB Darian Williams is the second Panther to earn the league's Newcomer of the Year honor, while LB Brandin Jordan is the second Saluki to earn the league's eight-year-old Freshman of the Year honor.

The Gateway's three first-round wins this season matched the league's record for opening-round playoff victories. In 2003 (the only other season in which the Gateway sent more than two teams to the playoffs), the league was 3-1 in the first round and 0-3 in three road quarterfinal games.

3 Games; 3 Comebacks; 3 Victories
The Gateway matched a league record with three first-round playoff victories, but it wasn't easy. All three Gateway teams trailed with 2 minutes remaining in their games, but Illinois State scored twice late to beat Eastern Illinois, 24-13; Southern Illinois scored in the final minute to beat UT-Martin, 36-30; and Youngstown State scored with 1:12 left to edge James Madison, 35-31.

The race for the top player, defensive player, and coach in FCS college football took a final step on Monday as ballots for the 2006 Walter Payton Award, Buck Buchanan Award, and Eddie Robinson Award were mailed to all voters. Four Gateway players and three Gateway coaches are on the lists.

Saturday Gateway Recaps; Penguins Earn Title Outright
Northern Iowa upended Illinois State in a battle between two top-20 Gateway teams, 38-27, and with that result gave Youngstown State the Gateway's outright title. Youngstown State is Playoff Bound; Penguins Lock Up Share of Conference Title
Youngstown State is back in the I-AA playoffs for the first time since 2000 after the Penguins wrapped up at least a share of the Gateway title and the league's automatic playoff berth with a 19-3 win at Western Kentucky on Saturday. Illinois State (42-20 at Indiana State); Missouri State (24-21 vs. Western Illinois); and Southern Illinois (47-23 vs. UNI) also won.

Youngstown State Takes Over Sole Possession of First; Donaldson Stars in Western Illinois Victory Over Indiana State
Youngstown State took over sole possession of first place in the Gateway Conference with its come-from-behind win against No. 12 Southern Illinois on Saturday, while Herb Donaldson of Western Illinois stunned the Sycamores in a 46-41 Western win with six touchdowns and 328 rushing yards for the Leathernecks. Illinois State and UNI also won key home games to keep pace with the Penguins.

Kill Nominated for FedEx Orange Bowl-FWAA Courage Award
Southern Illinois head coach Jerry Kill is this week's nominee for the FedEx Orange Bowl-FWAA Courage Award to be announced at the end of the 2006 season. Kill, 45, who is battling cancer and a series of seizures, returned to coaching duties on Tuesday, a week after he was hospitalized for four days after suffering a seizure.

Illinois State and UNI reamained unbeaten in league play as the Redbirds (3-0) won at Western Illinois and UNI (3-0) beat Youngstown State. In Terre Haute, Indiana State snapped its losing streak with a Homecoming win against Missouri State, winning for the first time since 2004. Meanwhile, Western Kentucky rallied from a 24-10 deficit to defeat Southern Illinois, 27-24, in Carbondale.

Battle for First Place on Gateway TV
This Saturday's contest between UNI and Youngstown State is this week's Gateway TV Game of the Week. Kickoff is at 3:07 p.m. (4:07 p.m. ET), and the game will air live on Fox College Sports Central (digital), KFXA (Cedar Rapids), KDSM (Des Moines) and will be aired on a tape-delayed basis by FSN Midwest (2 a.m.). WBCB (Youngstown) might also air the game live if an attendance threshold is met.

Weekly Gateway Football Notes - Sept. 24
The 22nd season of Gateway Conference play begins Saturday, Sept. 30, as six of eight league teams open league play. Southern Illinois has the longest current win streak in Gateway openers, as the Salukis have won four-straight league openers. UNI (14) has won the most league-opening games.

Gateway Football Saturday Recap
The Gateway Conference went 4-2 in what was the final tuneup for several schools before conference play begins Sept. 30 for six of the league's eight members. Ranked Gateway schools Illinois State (at Murray State), Southern Illinois (at Arkansas-Pine Bluff) and Youngstown State (at home against No. 16 UC Davis) all won on Saturday.

Sullivan Earns National Honor
Chris Sullivan was named the co-Offensive Lineman of the Week by Hansen's Football Gazette Thursday, making him the second Western Kentucky University individual to be honored by the organization in as many weeks.

Four Gateway Teams Ranked This Week (Sept. 18)
Four Gateway Conference teams hold spots in the nation's top 12 in the Sports Network top-25 poll of Sept. 18. Illinois State (6), Youngstown State (8), Southern Illinois (10) and UNI (12) represent the Gateway Conference. Western Illinois and Western Kentucky are among those schools receiving votes.

Weekly Football Notebook - Sept. 17
A couple of firsts highlighted Week 3 of the 2006 Gateway football season. Southern Illinois defeated Indiana, 35-28, giving the league its first victory over a I-A foe since 2003. It also marked the first-ever win for the Gateway against a member of the Big Ten (we're now 1-19). Illinois State's 44-30 dispatching of No. 18 Eastern Illinois marked the Gateway's first win over a ranked team this year. The Gateway was 5-2 against top-25 I-AA teams in 2005.

Salukis' Win at Indiana Highlights Gateway Action on Saturday
Nick Hill threw for four TDs, and the defense made a big statement, as Southern Illinois (2-0) became the first Gateway Conference school to beat a Big Ten foe when it came from behind to beat Indiana, 35-28. Gateway schools are now 1-19 all-time against the Big Ten.

Greg Ryan of Western Kentucky Earns National Award
Western Kentucky University's Greg Ryan earned the team's first individual national accolade of the season Thursday when Hansen's Football Gazette selected him its Offensive Lineman of the Week.

YSU's Wright Earns Prestigious Honor
Senior linebacker Jeremiah Wright (Orlando, Fla.) was one of four Division I-AA student-athletes to be selected to the American Football Coaches Association Good Works Team, the organization announced on Wednesday.

Four Teams Ranked in the Top 25 Again This Week
Headed by No. 6 Youngstown State, four Gateway Conference teams are in the Sports Network top-25 rankings this week. YSU moved up two spots from eighth after beating Maine last Saturday. Illinois State (7th), UNI (12) and Southern Illinois (16) also represent the conference in the rankings. All four are ranked in the CSN Coaches poll.

Gateway Weekly Notebook
So far this year, the Gateway Conference is 0-for-2 in games against top-25 I-AA teams. On Saturday, Sept. 16, Illinois State hosts Eastern Illinois in a battle of ranked teams. The Gateway was 5-2 against top-25 non-conference teams last year, which included Southern Illinois' playoff win at then-ranked No. 19 Eastern Illinois in 2005.

Week 2: Gateway Recaps
On Saturday, Sept. 9, the Gateway Conference combined for a 3-4 non-league record. Among the three losses were two defeats to nationally ranked I-AA teams on the road and a loss at I-A Wisconsin. Nationally ranked Illinois State and Youngstown State breezed to home wins against Central Arkansas and Maine, respectively.

Kill Announces Coach Kill Cancer Fund
During a football game last fall, Saluki football coach Jerry Kill experienced a seizure. While undergoing diagnostic testing for issues related to his seizure disorder, an X-ray revealed a tumor on his kidney, which was later diagnosed as cancerous.

Four Gateway Conference teams, including three in the Top 10, are ranked in the first regular-season Sports Network poll. UNI (up one spot to No. 3) and Illinois State (up two spots to No. 7) both climbed from their pre-season ranks, while Youngstown State (8th) and Southern Illinois (17th) also represent the Gateway.

Weekly Football Notebook - League Goes 4-4 in Initial Week of the Season
Several league games will be featured on regional and national distribution this week. In the first game of the 2006 Gateway television package, Indiana State faces Eastern Illinois on Saturday, Sept. 9, at 6 p.m. CT, and the game will be featured on FSN Midwest. Willy Daunic and Richard Baldinger will call the game from Charleston, Ill. Both teams are 0-1 after losing at a Big Ten opponent last weekend.

League goes 0-4 against I-A foes; Illinois State Scares K-State, but loses, 24-23
On Saturday, Sept. 2, Gateway Conference teams played four games against I-A schools on the road and came up empty, evening the league's non-conference record at 4-4 on the season. Illinois State had the best chance at winning, falling to K-State in Manhattan, Kan., 24-23.

Clean Sweep - Gateway Goes 4-0 on Opening Night
The Gateway Football Conference was perfect on the first night of the 2006 season. Thursday's action was highlighted by wins by nationally ranked UNI, Southern Illinois and Youngstown State. And Western Illinois easily handled Morehead State in Macomb.

Four Gateway Teams Ranked in Pre-Season Sports Network Top-25 Poll
With 17 starters returning from last year?s national championship squad, the Appalachian State Mountaineers begin the 2006 season as the No. 1 team in The Sports Network Top 25. Four Gateway schools are ranked in the Top 25, led by last year's national runnerup UNI, at No. 4.

2006 Gateway Football Conference Television Schedule
A Gateway Football Conference team will be featured on national or regional distribution in 11 of 12 weekends this fall, including six games that are part of the Gateway-produced television package in 2006. In addition to the league's six-game in-house package, two Gateway teams will be featured on ESPNU in non-conference games, while a league game is featured as part of CSTV's "National I-AA Game of the Week" package. Two games this fall will be broadcast on Sirius Satellite Radio as part of Sports Byline's I-AA National Radio Game of the Week package.
