Hawkins Taken in 5th Round in NFL Draft
For the second straight year, Illinois State was represented in the National Football League Draft when defensive end Brent Hawkins was selected by the Jacksonville Jaguars, on Sunday, in the fifth round with the 160th overall pick.

Illinois State Duo Earnas Hula Bowl MVP Honors
Illinois State's Brent Hawkins and Ryan Hoffman not only carried the flag for Illinois State, but for all of I-AA football, as the tandem claimed player of the game honors at the 2006 Hula Bowl Saturday night at Aloha Stadium. Hawkins earned the Hula Bowl Defensive MVP award, while Hoffman was named the game's Special Teams MVP.

Four Gateway Schools In Final 2005 Top-25 Polls
Four Gateway Conference teams are ranked in the final Sports Network and ESPN/USA Today top-25 polls, which includes two Gateway teams among the Top 10. Appalachian State?s 21-16 victory over UNI gave the Mountaineers the national championship, and No. 1 ranking that goes with it in the final polls. Appalachian State finishes atop the rankings for the first time in I-AA history after winning the first national crown in the school?s I-AA annals.

Terry Allen Returns to the Gateway; Named Missouri State Coach
Terry Allen, who cut his coaching teeth and enjoyed his greatest coaching success in the Gateway Football Conference, will return to one of the nation?s most potent Division I-AA leagues as the new head coach of the Missouri State University Bears. Allen?s appointment was announced Dec. 20. Allen has been given a five-year contract at Missouri State.

UNI Falls To Appalachian State in I-AA Title Game, 21-16
The University of Northern Iowa football team's 2005 journey has been filled with last second heroics and nail-biting finishes. Friday night's NCAA I-AA national championship game was no different. Unfortunately, in UNI's first national title game appearance, Appalachian State scored a 21-16 victory. It was the first national title for the Mountaineers and head coach Jerry Moore.

Gateway - Championship Game Notes
UNI is making its first ever appearance in the I-AA national championship game (and the fourth for the Gateway in the past nine years). The Panthers face Appalachian State on Friday, Dec. 16, at 7 p.m. CST, and the game can be seen on ESPN2. The Panthers have reached the title game with victories vs. Eastern Washington, at No. 1 ranked and top-seeded New Hampshire, and at No. 4 seed Texas State | Bracket.

UNI Upends Top-Seeded New Hampshire; Appalachian State Ends SIU's Season
After grabbing a 21-0 lead, Northern Iowa hung on for a 24-21 victory over No. 1-ranked New Hampshire on Saturday in the NCAA I-AA quarterfinals. UNI Beats Texas State, 40-37, in overtime thriller
The University of Northern Iowa defeated No. 4 seed Texas State, 40-37, in the semifinals of the I-AA playoffs and will play in Friday's (Dec. 16) championship game in Chattanooga, Tenn. It's the first title game appearance for UNI after five previous semifinal trips without a win. It marks the fourth title game for a Gateway team since 1997.

Gateway Playoff Notebook - UNI Reaches Semifinals
UNI (10-3) plays at No. 4 seed Texas State (11-2) on Friday, Dec. 9, at 7 p.m. (ESPN2) in San Marcos, Texas. The winner advances to the national championship game (Dec. 16). UNI is playing in its sixth semifinal and is 0-5 in previous trips. It represents the 11th semifinal appearance for a Gateway Conference member (the league is 3-7 all-time in NCAA semifinals).

2005 Gateway All-Newcomer Team
For the fourth-straight year, the Gateway?s Newcomer of the Year is a running back, while an Illinois State player has claimed the league?s freshman honor for the second time since 1999. RB Marcus Mason is the first Penguin to earn the league?s Newcomer of the Year honor, while DB Tom Nelson is the second Redbird to earn the league?s seven-year-old Freshman of the Year honor.

2005 Gateway All-Conference Team
For the first time in six years, a school has swept the top two player honors as Illinois State's WR Laurent Robinson and DE Brent Hawkins have been named the league's Offensive Player of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year by a vote of league coaches, media and sports information directors. Youngstown State's Jon Heacock, meanwhile, is the first Penguin mentor to earn the Bruce Craddock Coach of the Year award since YSU joined the Gateway in 1997.

Gateway Paired Up Against Top Two Seeds
In this week's round of the I-AA playoffs, the UNI Panthers play No. 1-ranked and top-seeded New Hampshire; while Southern Illinois plays at No. 2-seeded Applachian State. In its 20-year playoff history a Gateway school has played a top-four seeded team 23 times, and recorded a 9-14 record. Eight of the nine wins against a top-four seed were on the road (WKU beat McNeese State in 2002 in Chattanooga in the other result.) In the years in which the league beat either a No. 1 or No. 2 seed, the Gateway earned a national title (1997 and 2002)

Gateway Perfect in NCAA First Round
The Gateway Football Conference won both of its first-round NCAA I-AA playoff games on Saturday, Nov. 26. Eighth-ranked Southern Illinois won at No. 19 Eastern Illinois, 21-6; and No. 6 UNI survived No. 15 Eastern Washington, 41-38. The Panthers will now play No. 1-ranked and top-seeded New Hampshire; while Southern Illinois advances to play at No. 2-seeded Applachian State.

In 2005, the Gateway Football Conference has two representatives in the I-AA playoffs for the 11th-straight season. Gateway Highlights Academic All-District Teams
Highlighted by five Southern Illinois selections to the District V Academic All-District Team, the Gateway Football Conference had a total of 11 student-athletes selected to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District units, announced Thursday (Nov. 10). To be eligible for the award, an athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA and be a starter or key reserve.

This week's Gateway Football Conference players of the week are WR Laurent Robinson of Illinois State; LB Darin Heideman of UNI; OT Chad Rinehart of UNI; and punter Joe Bishop of Youngstown State. Robinson capped a record-setting year with a record-setting day in Illinois State's win vs. Indiana State; while Heideman and Bishop helped their teams to victories that led to tri-conference championships for both UNI and YSU, sharing the league title with Southern Illinois (all with 5-2 GFC records).

Gateway Weekly Notebook
The winner of the Nov. 12 game between UNI and Southern Illinois will earn the league?s automatic berth into the I-AA playoffs. The last time the two met at UNI with a championship on the line, UNI won, 43-40, in the conference finale in 2003. In that game, UNI was No. 11, and SIU was ranked No. 2 (with a 10-0 record). UNI trailed 31-14 midway through the third quarter, but rallied with 22 points in the fourth. UNI?s QB Tom Petrie was 28-of-40 for 422 yards and three TDs, while WR Eddie Galles had 16 catches, 251 yards and two scores to lead the Panther comeback. Kickoff is 5:05 at the UNI-Dome.

For the second time this season, a Gateway team knocked another Gateway team from the No. 1 spot. Last Thursday, Southern Illinois defeated then-ranked No. 1 Western Kentucky to knock the Hilltoppers from the top spot after they held the position for two weeks.

Weekly Gateway Notebook (Oct. 30)
Currently, there is a three-way tie for first place in the Gateway Conference standings as Southern Illinois, Western Kentucky, and Youngstown State have identical 4-1 league marks with 2 weeks remaining. There has never been a three-way tie at season?s end in the league?s 20 years, but there have been co-champions. Four times, teams have shared the title, including 1990 (UNI/Missouri State), 1995 (UNI/Eastern Illinois), 2002 (Western Illinois/Western Kentucky), and 2003 (UNI/Southern Illinois). All eight of those co-champs have represented the league in the I-AA playoffs.

This week's Gateway Football Players of the Week include RB Brian Thompson and LB Kye Stewart of Illinois State, and KR Dennis Mitchell of Western Kentucky. Illinois State upended No. 1-ranked Southern Illinois, 61-35, behind Thompson's four touchdowns, while Stewart contributed 11 tackles in that victory over SIU and Mitchell had two long punt returns to set up scoring chances for the Hilltoppers in their win against Missouri State. OG Barrett Anderson is the league's offensive lineman of the week.

Gateway Holds Nation's Top Two Spots
For the first time in league history, the top two teams in the I-AA Sports Network poll are from the Gateway Conference. After spending a league record 12 weeks at No. 1 last year, Southern Illinois is back at No. 1, jumping three spots from last week's poll. Western Kentucky is ranked No. 2 after beating Eastern Kentucky; and UNI also is in the Top 10, clocking in at No. 9.

Salukis Reclaim Nation's No. 1 Ranking
The Southern Illinois Salukis claim the No. 1 ranking in The Sports Network Top 25 after a 34-24 victory at Western Illinois. The Salukis, who held the top spot for one week earlier in the season, are 4-1 for the year and are undefeated against I-AA competition. Southern Illinois moves up one position after New Hampshire lost, 42-10, at William & Mary. The Salukis picked up 58 of a possible 114 first-place votes and earned 2,715 points to claim the No. 1 spot. Southern Illinois hosts Illinois State on Saturday.

Western Kentucky Claims Nation's No. 1 Spot
Western Kentucky, which plays at Auburn this coming weekend, has earned the No. 1 ranking in The Sports Network I-AA Top 25 poll for the first time since the school won the 2002 national championship. The Hilltoppers, who were idle last week, moved up one notch to the No. 1 position after Southern Illinois lost, 34-28, at Western Michigan.

ESPNU, Gateway Reach 5-Year Agreement
ESPNU, the new 24-hour college sports network, has reached a five-year agreement (through 2009) with the Gateway Football Conference. As part of the agreement, ESPNU has the option to produce and distribute one or more live telecasts of a Gateway Football Conference game in each year of the term.

The trio of Southern Illinois (5), Western Kentucky (8) and UNI (12) represent the Gateway Conference in the Sports Network pre-season top-25 poll, announced Monday, August 8. Western Illinois is among schools receiving votes. SIU received three first-place votes and trailed defending champion James Madison, Furman, Montana, and Eastern Washington in the poll. After winning the national championship in 2004, the James Madison Dukes begin the 2005 season as the No. 1 team in The Sports Network Top 25. The Dukes are ranked in the preseason for the first time since 2000, and this is the first time JMU is ranked in the preseason top five. James Madison received 49 of a possible 101 first-place votes and 2,333 points overall to earn the No. 1 ranking. Furman holds down the No. 2 ranking heading into 2005 and garnered 21 first-place votes. The Paladins are the favorites to win the Southern Conference. Gateway Announces 2005 TV Schedule
A minimum of eight regionally or national televised games will feature Gateway Football Conference teams, including five games that are part of the Gateway-produced television package in 2005. Conference games are featured in the package for five-straight weekends, beginning Saturday, Oct. 15. Three league teams will also be featured in non-conference telecasts, which includes one game on the CSTV "National I-AA Game of the Week" package.
