Gateway Honored for Sportsmanship Initiative
Western Illinois University Athletics Director Dr. Tim Van Alstine and Western Kentucky University A.D. Wood Selig were part of an all-star lineup honored at the 2005 Citizenship Through Sports Alliance (CTSA) Awards Dinner June 4 in St. Louis.

Gateway Announces 2004 Academic Honor Roll
Seven student-athletes highlight more than 200 who earned selection to the 2004 Gateway Football Conference Honor Roll, as announced by the league office. Those seven earned the league?s highest academic achievement by capturing the Gateway Football Conference President?s Council Academic Excellence Award.

Two Taken in 2005 NFL Draft
Boomer Grigsby of Illinois State and Brandon Jacobs of Southern Illinois were drafted Sunday, April 25, by the Kansas City Chiefs (5th Round) and New York Giants (4th Round), respectively.

Grigsby Earns National Player of the Year Honor
For the second straight season Illinois State's Boomer Grigsby has been tabbed as IAA.org's Defensive Player of the Year to headline the 40-man all-star team selected by I-AA.org, the worldwide leader in I-AA news distribution. Grigsby, the only three-time defensive player of the year in conference history, capped off his storied career with the NCAA, Gateway and Illinois State career tackle records with 580 stops. He has received all-America honors from the American Football Coaches Association, Associated Press, CollegeSportsReport.com, The Sports Network and the Walter Camp Foundation. Only six players, including defensive player of the year Grigsby have been repeat selections on the all-star squad. The I-AA.org All-Star squad puts a premium not only on performance, but also on excellence in the classroom, character off the field and other intangibles.

Three Ranked in Final 2004 I-AA Polls
Three teams represent the Gateway Football Conference in the final I-AA polls of 2004, including Southern Illinois, Western Kentucky and UNI. The Salukis held the No. 1 spot for most of the season before losing in the first round of the playoffs to Eastern Washington.

Kill Named National Coach of the Year
At the Division I-AA College Football Awards banquet at the Chattanooga Choo-Choo hotel Thursday night, Southern Illinois University football coach Jerry Kill was named the winner of the Eddie Robinson Award honoring the Coach of the Year.

The 36 winners of the 7th Annual Division I-AA Athletics Directors Association Academic All-Star Team were announced this weekend by the Division I-AA Athletics Directors Association (DI-AA ADA).

Gateway Players Honored on AP, AFCA Teams
Nine Gateway Football Conference players have been selected to the Associated Press All-America teams, as announced by the AP on Wednesday, Dec. 15. OL Buster Ashley of Western Kentucky and LB Boomer Grigsby of Illinois State also earned first-team honors on the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) team, announced Dec. 16.

Lou West Named Indiana State Head Coach
Indiana State University Director of Athletics, Andrea Myers, announced today (Dec. 13), that Lou West has been named the new head football coach at ISU. West takes the reigns of the Sycamore program with over a quarter century of coaching experience at the Division I level.

2004 Gateway All-Newcomer Team
For the first fourth-straight year, the Gateway?s Freshman of the Year is a quarterback, while a Southern Illinois running back has claimed the league?s newcomer honor for the second time in three seasons. RB Brandon Jacobs is the third Saluki to earn the league?s Newcomer of the Year honor, while QB Eric Sanders is the second Panther to earn the league?s six-year-old Freshman of the Year honor.

2004 Gateway All-Conference Team
LB Boomer Grigsby of Illinois State; QB Joel Sambursky of Southern Illinois; and Jerry Kill of Southern Illinois highlight the 2004 Gateway Football All-Conference Team, as announced by the league office on Tuesday, Nov. 30. Grigsby is a three-time Defensive Player of the Year; while Sambursky and Kill took home Offensive Player and Coach of the Year plaudits for the league champion Southern Illinois Salukis.

Gateway Season Ends in NCAA First Round
The Gateway Football Conference season ended Saturday as top-ranked Southern Illinois was upended by Eastern Washington, 35-31, in Carbondale; and Western Kentucky fell at Sam Houston State, 54-24. The Gateway went winless in the playoffs for just the second time since 1994 and sixth time in league history.

Gateway Sends Two Teams To I-AA Playoffs
With its win at Illinois State, Southern Illinois claimed the league?s automatic berth into the I-AA playoffs -- it?s SIU?s second-straight playoff appearance. Western Kentucky, 9-2, earned at at-large selection to the I-AA field. The Hilltoppers have reached the playoffs in four-straight seasons since joining the Gateway in 2001.

Weekly Gateway Notebook
The Gateway Conference hopes to expand its 18-11 non-conference mark with three non-league games on the schedule on Nov. 20. Three games complete the regular-season non-conference slate as UNI visits Northern Arizona; Western Kentucky is at Florida International; and Illinois State travels to Florida Atlantic.

Weekly Gateway Notebook (Nov. 7)
With its win at Illinois State, Southern Illinois has claimed the league?s automatic berth into the I-AA playoffs. The Salukis also have earned at least a share of the Gateway title. With a one-game lead and one league game remaining for both SIU (vs. Indiana State) and second-place Western Kentucky (vs. Western Illinois), the Salukis would win the tiebreaker to determine the bid (SIU beat Western) if Western Kentucky wins and SIU loses and the teams both finish at 6-1 in the league.

Southern Illinois can earn the league?s NCAA automatic berth and at least a share of the league title with a win Saturday at Illinois State. The Salukis can also earn a playoff berth with a loss at ISU, but Western Kentucky must also lose at SMS.

Two ranked Gateway teams battle for sole possession of first place as top-ranked Southern Illinois (5-1/2-0) hosts Western Kentucky (4-1/2-0) on Saturday, Oct. 16. If Western Kentucky is ranked in the Top 5 in the Oct. 11 polls, it will mark the fourth time in league history that two Gateway top-five teams faced one another.

Gateway Notebook (Oct. 3)
Heading into the sixth week of the season, four league teams have just one loss, including ranked teams Southern Illinois and Western Kentucky. Indiana State (4-1) and SMS (4-1) are having their best starts in nearly 10 seasons. In 1996, SMS had a 5-1 start before finishing 7-4. In 1995, the Sycamores started 5-1 and finished the year at 7-4.

Gateway Weekly Notebook (Sept. 19)
The SMS Bears will be looking to move to 4-0 for the first time since 1989, but it will take a win at I-A Tulsa to stay perfect. The Bears are 0-6 all-time against the Golden Hurricane. This season, the Gateway is 0-6 against I-A teams. The Gateway has 24 I-A wins since 1985, which includes at least one I-A win every year since 1995.

Western Kentucky visits Eastern Kentucky this Saturday in the 81st meeting between the two schools. Western leads the series, 44-33-3, which includes a 36-3 Hilltopper win last year. 2004 Gateway TV Schedule
A minimum of eight games will be aired as part of the Gateway Football Conference television package in 2004. Included in the package this year are two non-conference games, and one game on the CSTV "National I-AA Game of the Week" package.
