Three Earn Academic Honor
The 31 winners of the Sixth Annual Division I-AA Athletics Directors Association Academic All-Star Team were announced this weekend by the Division I-AA Athletics Directors Association (DI-AA ADA). Three Gateway players (Perry Cox and Russ Michna of Western Illinois; and Tom Petrie of UNI) have been honored.

Gateway Ends Season With 4 in Top 10
For the first time in league history, the Gateway Football Conference has four teams ranked in the final Top 10 of the Sports Network/CSTV and ESPN/USA Today top-25 polls. Northern Iowa, Southern Illinois, Western Illinois and Western Kentucky (the league's four playoff teams) represent the conference in the season-ending polls.

2003 Sports Network All-America Team
The Gateway Football Conference, which landed a record four teams in the I-AA playoffs, led all leagues with 13 selections, on the 2003 Sports Network All-American teams, announced Monday, Dec. 15. Illinois State's Boomer Grigsby, Western Kentucky's Buster Ashley, and Western Illinois' Lee Russell represented the Gateway on the First Team.

2003 Season Ends in NCAA Quarterfinals
The league had a tough go of it on December 6, as all three remaining Gateway teams in the playoffs fell to higher-seeded opponents on the road, thus ending the 2003 Gateway campaign. Western Illinois fell at No. 4-seeded Colgate, 28-27; Northern Iowa was beaten at No. 2-seeded Delaware, 37-7; and Western Kentucky was stopped at No. 3 seed Wofford, 34-17.

Thiessen Earns Academic All-America Honor
Youngstown State senior free safety Scott Thiessen (Modesto, Calif.) has been named a first-team CoSIDA Academic All-American, the organization announced on Monday.

2003 Gateway All-Newcomer Team
For the first time in league history, a Gateway Newcomer of the Year is from the University of Northern Iowa; while the league?s Freshman of the Year hails from Western Kentucky University.

Gateway Sends Four To I-AA Playoffs
The 2003 season is an historic one for I-AA football, as for the first time, a league received four bids to the 16-team field. The Gateway Football Conference, which never before had three playoff teams in the same year, is the first to capture 1/4 of the I-AA field. UNI, Southern Illinois, Western Illinois, and Western Kentucky represent the Gateway Conference in the 2003 NCAA I-AA playoff field

2003 Gateway All-Conference Team
For the first time in league history, the Gateway has a repeat Offensive Player of the Year and a repeat Defensive Player of the Year honoree in the same season, as QB Russ Michna and LB Boomer Grigsby successfully defended their 2002 individual honors by earning 2003 Gateway Conference top player awards. Additionally, Jerry Kill - a finalist for Eddie Robinson national coach of the year honors - took the Bruce Craddock Coach of the Year award for league co-champ Southern Illinois.

Ten Gateway Conference players have been named to their respective district Academic All-America teams this week. QB Russ Michna and OL Perry Cox of Western Illinois both hold perfect 4.0 cumulative grade point averages and represent the league on the District V team.

Four Teams in Final Top 10 of 2003 Regular-Season Poll
In the final regular-season poll of 2003, four Gateway schools are in the Sports Network/CSTV Top 10, including Southern Illinois, which ranks No. 4 in the nation to lead all Gateway teams. UNI ranks No. 7 in the poll, while Western Kentucky (9th) and Western Illinois (10th) represent the league in the nation's Top 10. It marks the fourth time this year that four Gateway members were in the Top 10 during the same week.

2003 Gateway Pre-Season Poll
Western Illinois is headed back to the NCAA I-AA playoffs, if the preseason prognosticators are correct. The defending 2002 Gateway co-champs will be hard-pressed to repeat on last year?s 11-2 campaign, but five returning All-Americans lead the way for Western. Surprisingly, it marks the first time Western Illinois has been picked to win the conference title as the league enters its 19th season. Notably, Western has four Gateway championships in the past six years. Western received 24 of 32 first-place tallies and 247 total points.

2003 Gateway TV Schedule
A minimum of seven games will be aired as part of the Gateway Football Conference television package in 2003. Included in the package this year are three non-conference games (two against Ohio Valley Conference members and one with the Southland).
