2002 Gateway Season Review
By virtue of winning a I-AA national title, the 2002 season became one of the most successful in the 18 years of Gateway football. Western Kentucky became the first school in I-AA history to beat the top three seeds en route to a national title as the Hilltoppers downed top-seeded McNeese State, 34-14, in the 2002 I-AA championship game.

Harbaugh Gets National Coaching Honor
The American Football Coaches Association announced Tuesday at the conclusion of its 2003 convention that Western Kentucky University head coach Jack Harbaugh was selected National I-AA Coach of the Year in a vote of his peers.

Gateway Players Honored for Academics
The 43 winners of the Fifth Annual Division I-AA Athletics Directors Association Academic All-Star #$%^Team were announced this weekend by the Division I-AA Athletics Directors Association (DI-AA ADA). #$%^The winners were chosen from 115 nominees and were announced at the Division I-AA football championship in #$%^Chattanooga, Tennessee.

Gateway Leads I-AA With 15 on Sports Network All-America Team
I-AA national championship participants McNeese State and Western Kentucky combined for six players on The Sports Network 2002 All-America Team, including three on the First-Team for the Cowboys and two for the Hilltoppers. For WKU, offensive lineman Chris Price and linebacker Sherrod Coates were recognized as First-Teamers by a panel of I-AA media members and sports information directors. While 'Topper offensive lineman Buster Ashley was noted as a Second-Team member. In all, 76 players from 13 different conferences were selected to either the first-, second-, or third-team, along with two players from independent Samford.

Western Kentucky Takes I-AA National Crown
AP -- Jack Harbaugh could hardly believe he was the coach of the Division I-AA national champions. After 41 seasons, the father of former NFL quarterback Jim Harbaugh finally reached the top Friday night. He guided Western Kentucky through a remarkable turnaround to its first football title, avenging an early loss by defeating McNeese State 34-14.

Gateway Highlights 2002 AP All-America Team
Eleven Gateway players earned Associated Press All-America honors, including OL Chris Price and LB Sherrod Coates of Western Kentucky; PK Mackenzie Hoambrecker of UNI; and punter Mike Scifres of Western Illinois, who earned first-team plaudits. It marks just the fourth time in league history that as many as four earned first-team AP honors.

Three Make AFCA All-America Team
Three Gateway players -- OL Chris Price of Western Kentucky; PK Mackenzie Hoambrecker of UNI; and P Mike Scifres of Western Illinois have been named first-team All-Americans by the American Football Coaches Association.

2002 Gateway All-Newcomer Team
For the first time in league history, a school has swept the league?s Freshman of the Year and Newcomer of the Year honors. QB Joel Sambursky becomes the first Saluki to win the four-year-old Gateway Freshman of the Year honor, while teammate RB Muhammad Abdulqaadir ran away with the league?s Newcomer of the Year honor. Western Illinois had the most honorees of any Gateway school as the Leathernecks had seven (1/4 of the entire team) on the first-team unit.

2002 Gateway All-Conference Team
One of the nation?s top signal-callers and a record-setting defender highlight the 2002 All-Conference Team as QB Russ Michna of Western Illinois has captured the league?s Offensive Player of the Year award, and LB Boomer Grigsby of Illinois State has earned GFC Defensive Player of the Year honors. Don Patterson - a finalist for Eddie Robinson national coach of the year honors - took the Bruce Craddock Coach of the Year award for league co-champ Western Illinois.

Thirty-five student-athletes, including 13 who earned first-team honors, highlight the 2002 Gateway Conference all-academic team, announced by the league office Monday, Nov. 25.

2002 Gateway Preseason Poll
Northern Iowa surprised some folks last year after being picked fifth in the preseason conference poll. The Panthers not only won the league, but reached the I-AA playoff semifinals. This year, though, Northern Iowa has been selected by coaches, media and sports information directors to win the Gateway Football Conference.
